  7.     God will decide who succeeds Mother Teresa as head of the
  8. Missionaries of Charity -- though the Vatican will certainly
  9. have a say. The revered sister, now 79, last week stepped aside
  10. for health reasons after serving 40 years as superior-general
  11. of the order she founded. When asked who would take her place,
  12. she lifted her hand toward heaven and said, "We will act the way
  13. he leads us." Known as the "saint of the gutters" for her work
  14. among the poor and sick of Calcutta, she won the Nobel Prize for
  15. Peace in 1979 and traveled ceaselessly in support of her
  16. mission. Since a heart attack last year, however, she rarely
  17. leaves her Calcutta home.
